Water & Business for Tanzania – Emmanuel School

Drinking water supply system for EMMANUEL School – Arusha

1st project step: drilling point location & Approval procedure
As a first measure, the local company WED Water & Exploration carried out a water survey and created a hydrogeological report.
As a further step, the local authorities in Arusha had to apply for a drilling permit and a water permit. After the permits were granted, the drilling contract could be signed with a local drilling company.

2nd project step: well drilling
In the second step, the drilling company drilled the well using the flush drilling method. The well drilling was carried out in the presence of the manager of the WED company, who also took the data for the required drilling profile and the soil samples from the individual layers of earth.

3. Project step: Pump test
Well depth: 78 meters
Upper water level: 66.8 meters
Well pipe diameter: 125/5mm
Flow rate: 55 l/minute
Total pump height: 76 meters
Total pump pipe length: currently 80 meters
Pumping time: 72 hours
Direction: Elirehema Manjecka

4. Project step: Installation – submersible pump
Based on the data given above, the appropriate solar pump systems for the operation of the water supply systems could be ordered and installed after acceptance of the pumping test.
The solar systems are of the Lorentz type – pumps: PS 1800 C-SJ5-12 incl. controller,
8 solar cells, each (LC185-24M) = 1480 watts – 24 volts, including the necessary connections.
Furthermore, the digging, procurement and laying of approx. 600 m of water pipes as well as the installation of the connections to the existing 5000l tanks were necessary.
The systems are currently operated with solar pumps that were attached by means of roof mounting.
In order to be able to supply the school building with water over a large area, 3 drinking water tanks, each with a capacity of 5000 liters, were installed on brick tank towers.
Experts laid pipes from the well on the school grounds to the individual tank towers and from there to the individual water extraction points for the school children. The connections to the individual water tanks were mounted extra fixed, and the water and power lines to the sanitary facilities were correctly laid.
