Basic training in craft trades – Tanzania

As a foundation for their training at the Maji Ni Uhai Campus of Water Technology the participants are given basic training in one of the trades i.e. mason, electrician, locksmith, mechanic or plumber in a state-approved vocational school in Tanzania.

The successful completion of the training in any of these professions is the basic requirement for the admission to the well drilling training programme in Maji Ni Uhai Campus of Water Technology in Tanzania.

Job description

Bricklayer:
To complete the well driller training it is a prerequisite as a bricklayer to have the basic knowledge of building masonry ring wells and water
storage facilities.

Electrician:
The job of an electrician provides a basis for further training as a pump and photovoltaic specialist and is an important part of the training
concept. Another important key aspect is the acquirement of knowledge to produce current with the power of the sun.

Locksmith/Welder:
A completed apprenticeship as a locksmith or welder is a requirement for training as a Well Driller. The drilling of deep wells with well drilling
machines is one of the main tasks in this profession. Further basic knowledge in mechanical engineering is required so that if necessary they
are independently able to execute minor repairs and maintenance on the equipment.

Before the start of vocational training in the state-approved schools, candidates have to pass an entrance examination.

Director: Mrs Kammleiter
Educational Director: Mr Kammleiter

The Training Centre Hai Vocational Training Center is a nationally recognized vocational school for trades such as masonry, mechanics, electricians, carpenters, and office clerks. The village of Hai is located directly under Mt Kilimanjaro at Moshi Road between Moshi and Usa River. The training centre accommodates around 500 students who in the boarding school aside from their school education receive both board and lodging.

VETA – Vocational Educational and
Training Authority
(State-Approved Vocational School in Tanzania)

Administrator:
General director Mr. Zebadiah Stephano Moshi

Responsible for the theoretical part of the LBW training to be Well Drillers.

The goal of the training in the VETA (EFE) project in Tanzania is the training of a globally
competitive workforce for the industry through collaboration with the Department of
Technical Education within the Ministry of Education and the vocational training
authority. The LNW well driller training project is actively supported by the management
and will in the future also be officially recognised by the government in Tanzania.

Apprenticeship for mason and plumber

Conditions of admission to the training course
Positive conclusion of the apprenticeship as a mason at the officially recognised school VETA-Vocational Educational Training Center or VETA Moshi.

Training content
The training for the concrete formwork mason consists of a theoretical part and a practical project. In the first modul the participants learn the theoretical expertise for example:

  • planning and implementation of buildings
  • static calculation of sewage treatment plants
  • knowledge of water supply and sanitary facilities
  • hygiene and environmental standards

In the practical training part the participants learn how to construct a hand-dug well with a depth of 10 metres.

Important elements of the practical training are:

  • construction of school buildings with sanitary facilities
  • building of organic sewage treatment plants
  • building of concrete drinking water reservoirs & rainwater retention basins
  • renovation of old wells & spring tappings

On conclusion of the training the participants should independently be able to plan and calculate the construction. It is LNW`s aim with this project to construct school buildings with kitchens and sanitary facilities, so that school children in Tanzania have access to water & sanitary facilities.

Photovoltaic & Pump expert

Conditions of admission to the training course
Positive conclusion of the apprenticeship as an electrician at the nationally approved training school VETA-Vocational Educational Training Center or VETA Moshi.

Educational content
Training for the installation of solar pump constructions, which are run on solar energy.

  • theoretical expertise in solar technology
  • realisation of pumping tests
  • operation & maintenance of solar pump constructions
  • installation of solar moduls
  • installation of photovoltaic constructions to produce electricity

On completion of their basic training the best students on the course will have the possibility of doing a further special training in solar pump technology for the installation of solar pumps manufactured by the company Pumpmakers. These solar pumps have been especially developed for the transportation of water from wells for animals.

Products in the solar and photovoltaic energy sector, especially in Africa, have a higher significance, due to the long hours of sunshine each day around the regions of the equator. This eco-friendly form of energy is an ideal and cost-efficient alternative to the diesel powered unit.

Well well construction expert

Conditions of admission to the training course
Positive conclusion of the apprenticeship as a metalworker or welder at the nationally approved training school Hai Vocational Training Center Moshi.

Educational content

  • Theoretical & practical expertise in well drilling techniques
  • Knowledge of different drilling methods
  • Geology & mineralogy
  • Service of machines & maintenance
  • Generate drilling profiles
  • Execution of long term pump tests

Practical training follows for the installation of drilled wells up to a depth of roughly 300 meters. The bore holes are implemented with a diameter of 180 mm to 300 mm and the installation pipes, which are used, have a diameter of 90 mm – 200 mm. Filter pipes are placed on the height of the water-bearing level and the ringarea is filled with quartz gravel. To prevent the intrusion of surface water, the well is plugged with a clay seal.

On completion of the well drilling work, an underwater pump with the necessary efficiency and output is installed and with a long-term pumping test the water quantity available in the drilled well will be determined.

On conclusion of the drilling work a professional drilling profile is compiled for the governmental board which gives specific information about the condition of the soil.
